HP 5/6 Blue Team Wins TurLaxin' Tournament

McKinney, Texas November 16-17, 2013: Highland Park 5/6 Blue came back to win the championship at the TURLAXIN’ Tournament under the lights versus ESD.

The Scots opened tournament play with a strong team win against Coppell followed by a tough loss to ESD. After the tough loss the boys proved to be determined to leave it all on the field and make the playoffs.  The Scots started Sunday by winning their first game against a tough Rockwall team and scoring enough points to earn a first round bye and the #2 ranking in the playoffs.

HP started the playoffs with a very tough and physical win against Plano West, propelling the Scots to a rematch under the lights against the #1 seed team ESD. The Scots started out slow against ESD allowing two early goals, but they fought hard and tied it up at half time 2-2. Again the Scots came out slow in the 2nd half allowing ESD to jump out to a 4-2 lead. Though they were losing the team never quit, and in the last minutes of the game the Scots saw momentum start to switch their way.

Goalie and tournament MVP Alex Iredale made countless 1 on 1 saves all weekend but in the finals he proved to be the spark the team needed.  The offense fueled by their goalie came alive in the final moments, and were able to tie the game up with less than a minute left.  Strong faceoff play all tournament allowed HP to control the ball for the last possession of the game.

With time winding down the offense was patient and waited for that perfect opportunity, with a sweep across the top of the box Thomas Menkie scored the tournament winning goal as time expired. The team fought their way back the entire game and showed exceptional perseverance and teamwork to come out tournament champions.

The team is coached by Scott Gelston and Jim O’Shea.
