Dear Parents and Friends of Highland Park Boys Lacrosse,
It is that time of year again! We have successfully completed our fall lacrosse programs and are quickly gearing up for our 16th season of Fighting Scot Lacrosse. Our 600 players and coaches have worked hard over this past summer and fall, continuing to develop their skills and prepare for our 2012 season.
What started out as a conversation between four friends quickly turned into one of the most competitive interstate lacrosse tournaments in the nation -- and this year looks like the best one yet.
The second annual King of Spring Face-Off Classic is scheduled for March 11-16 and boasts 18 high schools from seven states doing battle in Durham, N.C.
Included in that list of 18 teams are the original four friends whose conversation started it: Lantzy, McDonogh School (Owings Mills, Md.) coach Andy Hilgartner, Highland Park (Dallas, Texas) coach Derek Thomson and McCallie School (Chattanooga, Tenn.) coach Troy Kemp.
“[This tournament] is a good measuring stick of where Texas lacrosse is compared to other parts of the U.S.,” said Thomson, who has led Highland Park two three straight Division I State championships. “I always like to see where our kids stack up and they do too.”
Brine, Great Atlantic Lacrosse Company, and Lacrosse.com have partnered with Durham Academy, the City of Durham, and Duke University to host the 2nd Annual Brine King of the Spring Face-Off Classic March 11-14. This year's field has been expanded to 18 teams from seven different states, including three state championship teams from Tennessee (McCallie School), Texas (Highland Park), and North Carolina (Charlotte Country Day School).
Saturday March 12 2:00 pm - Highland Park - Charlotte Country Day (NC)
Sunday March 13 10:00 am - Montgomery Bell Acad. (TN) - Highland Park
Monday March 14 5:00 pm - McDonogh School (MD) - Highland Park
I had this story written. Florida State breezes past Texas. Or something to that effect.
The No. 5-ranked Seminoles were a logical pre-game hedge. FSU has tons of talent, a premium goalie, tournament experience, and a steady coach. I just didn't bank on No. 20 Texas – a team that imploded at the end of last season and was breaking in a new coach – to play with poise, as well as with a chip on its collective shoulder.
